The JASCO history club will choose a theme, event, or time period that will be our loose focus for the month. Topics will range from samurai folktales to modern Japanese feats of technology. We will recommend readings and films for each month, as well as providing a brief description of the topic to give participants some ideas to get going. The topic for this month is listed below.

The History of Yōkai — Demons, Monsters, Goblins and Ghosts — in Folklore, Literature, Art and Anime

JASCO member Ryan Hoover, and Executive Director Akisa Fukuzawa, will talk about this popular realm of the supernatural and its appeal to children and adults. Yōkai (and related Yūrei or ghosts) have expanded in popularity beyond Japan to the West in the last 30 years. We’ll look at Shigeru Mizuki’s cartoon yōkai characters, GeGeGe no Kitaro and friends in manga and anime; Studio Ghibli’s use of yōkai and yūrei in anime films by Hayao Miyazaki; the new Yokai Watch on The Cartoon Network.
